For the longest time I thought my grandmother was white. No one made a point to explain to me her and my ethnicity; they jusy thought I already knew. Since I found out that I am creole, I have been very excited to learn more about my heritage and history. I love this website! I love where I came from and would like to educate more people about my background.

I am so glad to have come across your website! All of my in-laws live down in Louisiana, in and around New Orleans. I am trying to have my step-son to learn the creole language as it is part of his heritage.

I have to clarify: my first point is that we realize that it is not unique or unusual to have a family of skin colors from white to black, and everything in-between. I sometimes hear people mention this as if it's rare. It's not. I believe it is wonderful to honor all of our heritage, the native American, the French, the African, the Spanish...Irish...everything, but not to confuse this with being a classified race. We have a solid and documented culture that is a result of a history of race-mixing. I just don't believe that makes us a race, but part of a cultural identity that is limitless and rich.

I love the site! I have written a novel about a Creole woman who is conflicted by her roots. I will not enter the URl here, but will send it in the contact area. I believe Creole is a culture and not a race.

may be i was misunderstood. i have no problem with light complextion blacks. most of my circle of friend fallin that catogory. maybe they let me in because i got "good hair" ha ha. no but sieriously speaking i agree with the bro who views creole as an ethninticity. i have spent plenty time with LA. creoles the from the metoyers and rachelles of cane river to the meyers and dejous of new orleans. i not saying we should be africans but i am saying that being black is our common bond whether in brazil, new orleans, angola, dominica, france, or Texas. and what do yall concider us mixed black texans? mulatos or creoles.

Easy Augustine, You sound a little upset about all this. My family has roots in Mississippi, Louisiana and Ireland. I’ve been called everything from light skinned, to beige, and even caramel. However, I view myself as a black American; and here’s why. There isn’t a country or a race of people known as African American, Creole, Latino, Mixed race, Jew etc… there is a difference between race and ethnicity. All of the fore mentioned terms are ethnic identifiers with specific cultural distinctions. Not RACE; a good friend of mine, who is Creole, feels the same as I do. Not because he is turning his back on his Creole cultural heritage, But because culture is something that you live, and that just hasn’t been his experience. Conversely, most African Americans don’t have anything culturally or ethnically in common with people in Africa, just like most Louisiana Creoles don’t practice voo doo and I sure as hell don’t know anything about Ireland. So at the end of the day I think it’s much to do about nothing. As far as the “anti Creole attitude” I think that must be a bigger deal down south than it is out west. In Cali, every other black person you pass is light bright and damn near white : ) were so racially diverse and mixed in CA that soon, CA will be known as Brazil north. Lol. BTW, what ever my Creole brothers and sisters do, don’t stop making blackened catfish and Jambalaya : ) Peace & love, Geechy Dan

Hello All.. Every now and then We receive comments from Our guest insisting that Creoles are in denial of their Racial heritage, which is far from the truth.. For 6 years and since the inception of frenchcreoles We have always tried to clarify the issue, that Being Creole does NOT denote Race but rather a Distinct Culture, but, there is always someone out there that thinks otherwise.. There are Black Creoles ,White Creoles and mixed Race Creoles..This web site not only honors Our Mixed Race heritage but also Our african roots.. In no way are Creoles , especially on this web site in denial of their African Roots....Because a Great deal of Creoles have fair skin doesn't mean that We don't want to be Black.. We are Not Completely black and We are NOT Completely White... We are Creoles and We are entitled to be respected for what We are ... We were not Created to please others, Who don't like the way We look.... If you mix the different colors of the crayons you most certainly will get black, but Creoles are not Crayons and We did'nt turn out Black....Yes The Haitians, Were the FirstPeople of African decent in the World to Gain their freedom from their European oppressors, but if you study their History, carefully, you will find that Their Great leaders and presidents were Creoles of Color .. ..All our lives we have been looked down by others who expect that We should be humble and apologetic because we don't fit the mold...Well, we don't care about the mold...because the Mold has never cared about the Creole. We care more about who We are and how Much Our ancestors tried to keep Our Culture Alive ... I do not want my Grand kids to grow up thinking that because they have fair skin that they are not acceptable...I had to fight this Racist attitude all my life simply because my skin was light...I don't claim to be better than anyone else but I am VERY proud of my Creole Hereitage and My light skin and it does'nt matter to Me who thinks otherwise.... I'm not concerned about Malkcom X or what others seem to think.. because we are not Black in color does not pre-supose that Creoles are in denial or are ashamed of their Black roots..Every light skinned Creole can tell you that We did not choose the way We look nor who Our ancestors would be..... It seems that Racism comes in all colors..many of the visitors who surf on to the web site are offended to See many light skinned Creoles and very few Dark skinned Creoles and assume that We are in Denial...Well the fact of the matter is that We are here to stay and We will not allow Our culture to die simply because someone is push out of shape by the way We look... Not only do we have to fight White Racism but Anti- Creole attitudes from other people of color .If people are offended by what they see on Frenchcre0oles.com then they can simply click the button on the mouse augustine/Comeaux ...A Creole Forever
